Windows 7 Released in Australia

Windows 7 was officially launched in Australia today with the first recipient being handed his copy personally by Harvey Norman's Gerry Harvey at midnight last night. Retail stores will start putting the new operating system up on shelves from today with the prices being as follows:

This is about AU$70 more than what it is retailing for in the US.

Microsoft's AU site also seems to be having problems. After clicking on an advertisement earlier today and then following the link to Get It Now we were presented with a 404 page. This 404 error is now gone but the Get It Now link now redirects visitors to the Microsoft UK online shop instead.

Very poor Microsoft...

Also absent is any detail about the Windows 7 'Famiy Pack' announced in the US. The Family Pack is a 3-license copy of Home Premium for US$149. Microsoft have said previously that this will be available in AU but expect it to come in at around AU$300 if it is made available at all.

Not the best news in the world but at least it is here!

HP Mini 311 Benchmarks!

Laptopmag have done the first benchmarks of the HP Mini 311 with the Nvidia ION LE chipset.

As the first netbook with the Nvidia ION and Geforce 9400M graphics the Mini 311 looked like it could be the fastest netbook yet released.

Well we can confirm that it does score very well in the standard PC Mark 05 and 3D Mark 06 tests:

3D Mark 06	1386	126

As you can see it clearly beats the previous number one netbook, the ASUS EEE PC 1005HA-P, by a healthy margin in both tests. The 3D performance is greatly increased showing the clear advantage the 9400M has over the Intel GMA950 GPU.

What does this mean for real world performance? The ION based netbook should be more capable of some light 3D gaming as the dedicated GPU will take the bulk of 3D processing. Older and less graphic intensive games like World of Warcraft and Counterstrike should be playable on medium settings.

Video encoding will also benefit with Laptopmag noting that the Mini 311 was 5 times faster than the average netbook in this regard. The also said that it was playing 1080p trailers from the iTunes store with 'acceptable' performance.

Any software not making use of the GPU will still remain poor however. In this regard we are referring to high definition flash video which as a CPU intensive process will still be choppy and unwatchable.

EEE PC Touch Screen Mod

An enterprising German modder has hacked up an EEE PC 701 for use in a kitchen cupboard door. The simple but brilliant design required an EEE PC 701 and a 7" touch screen, both available on eBay.

They then simply cut a hole in the door, placed a frame around it, and then made compartment for the computer at the back.

What would you need a touch screen computer in a cupboard door your wife says? For any of the below reasons:

online recipes
listening to music
watching TV or videos
digital photo frame
reading rss feeds
checking weather information
